"They have such beautiful eyes" - Probably quoted by every person that walked past their enclosure today!

Today when I went to the zoo there were some volunteers explaining the situation of Sumatran Tigers in the wild. As below states, there are only 350 thought to be left in the wild today. That would mean the 5 that are contained in Taronga Zoo would make up 1 percent of the world's Sumatran Tiger numbers. The number that is in the wild doesn't even come near the number of half of my high school that I went to. Something about these numbers hit a heart string for me. Even though I always saw Sumatran Tigers to have grace, power, and beauty, I never thought of them to be fragile.

We as humans need to realise that our environment is fragile. We need to think of ways in which we as people can be productive in ways that are economically viable, environmentally thoughtful, and socially considerate. I think this change can take part in the smallest parts of our everyday lives such as, picking up bits of rubbish off the street when we walk past some, thinking about the life-cycle of an object before we throw it in the trash, thinking of better materials to use in a design rather than using something because it is cheap (of course there are many more, and yes there are limits to all of these). But I just want to say that it is possible to make changes in small areas of our lives to make better locally, which will hopefully have an effect globally.

If you have made it this far, thank you for listening to my rant.

What do you reckon would be a good way to help these guys carry on. Comments would be greatly appreciated. Our small contribution may help in a large way.

This is gorgeous! I hope one day we will be able to get the Sumatran tigers, and many other tigers into a sustainable population. I don't want one day to only see these beautiful animals in a photographs and from memory.:)

It is sad that the numbers aren't in the best of shape but the best we can do is share each others art and raise awareness. I guess it's best to be thankful that they are still around, and that there are people who are doing some great conservation work.

Heh! It seems to be saying: "Got a goodie for me?"

You're right that beautiful pictures like this should remind us to try and do something for endangered species such as tigers. What better way to get people interested in it?

Yep you're right, it was relatively close to their feeding time! Thanks for your kind words. By sharing art and raising awareness through their beauty, I like your thinking! :D

I agree- if everyone would change a little towards envirement protection- a lot would change.
But if I tell people that small steps can make a big change, they say something like there aren't enough doing small steps, so it makes no difference if they do or do not change.
That makes me sad.
It would also help if we punish the people wear their fur, sell it, hunt them ... etc. harder... read an article that there are still enough people thinking that its important to wear a dead animals which are near to exticntion

But- great photo! Even if it is a sad theme- have a joy for the beautiful cat you captured there :3

It's true, we all feel apathetic at times. If no one else is doing it why should we. The reason why we should, is because we should live to be the change we want to see.

In regards to punishing people, I don't think that negative action always helps. Sometimes to economic gain for some people is enough to drive them to poach etc even with restrictions in place. But I agree that it should be made harder, ranger patrols etc I am sure are helping this situation.

Thanks very much for the comments and your thoughtful words.
